George Washington Carver
Born at the tail end of the Civil War, George Washington Carver, the son of slaves, pioneered agriculture research that launched a new era for farms across the American south. Working predominantly out of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Tuskegee, Alabama, he showed the value of crop rotation, introduced hundreds of possible uses for the peanut and soybean, and produced hardier hybrids of a number of other plants — most notably, cotton.
